Insurance & Payment Options at Northern Edge Counseling

At Northern Edge Counseling, we believe that therapy should be accessible and manageable, both emotionally and financially. We’re committed to making the process as clear and stress-free as possible, so you can focus on what matters most—your mental health.

Insurance & Payment Options

In-Network Insurance Coverage

We’re currently in-network with the following providers:

  • UCare
  • BlueCross BlueShield
  • All plans under the Optum umbrella (UnitedHealthcare, United Behavioral Health, Surest, Bind, Medica)
  • Minnesota Medicaid

This means we can directly bill your insurance for individual therapy, couples therapy, and certain specialized services. Before your first session, we strongly encourage you to contact us for an eligibility check. This will ensure that you fully understand your coverage, including copays or deductibles, so there are no surprises when it’s time to pay.

Out-of-Network Benefits

We understand that not everyone has an in-network option, and that’s okay! If your insurance isn’t listed above, we are happy to work with you as an out-of-network provider. While we can’t bill your insurance directly, we can guide you through the process of using your out-of-network benefits.

Many clients use their Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA) to cover therapy costs. If that’s something you’re considering, we’ll provide all the necessary documentation for you to submit for reimbursement.

Steps to Use Your Out-of-Network Benefits:

  1. Call your insurance provider and ask about out-of-network reimbursement for therapy.
  2. Ask them to clarify your coverage limits and what forms you’ll need to submit for reimbursement.
  3. Submit the paperwork to your insurer (we’ll provide you with a superbill detailing all necessary information).

We’re happy to answer any questions about this process and offer additional support where needed.

Specialized Services: Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) & Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)

Therapy is an investment in your well-being, and we strive to make it as manageable as possible. We offer flexible payment options, including sliding scale fees for those who qualify and payment plans where needed. We want to ensure that financial concerns never stand in the way of getting the help you deserve.

Free Consultation

Not sure how therapy fits into your life or budget? We offer a free consultation to talk through any questions you might have—whether it’s about therapy itself or how to manage the financial aspects. Our goal is to make sure therapy works for you, in every way.

Session Flexibility

Whether you prefer in-person or telehealth sessions, we offer flexible scheduling to make therapy fit into your life. You can also adjust the frequency of your sessions as needed, so your journey with us feels right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to pay anything out of pocket for therapy?

It depends on your insurance coverage and the type of therapy you receive. We’ll always work with you to ensure you know your costs upfront, by completing an insurance benefits check prior to your first appointment. From that we’ll verify your benefits and inform you of any copays, deductibles, or out-of-pocket costs to give you a total financial picture of what therapy will cost. For out-of-network clients, we provide documentation so you can submit claims for reimbursement and walk you through what costs you can expect from each session.

Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) covered by insurance?

Typically, there are segments of the Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) process that are not covered by traditional insurance providers due to its specialized nature. However, many clients use their HSA or HRA to finance the KAP sessions that are not usually covered by insurance carriers. We can provide detailed invoices/superbills for these therapies to help you with reimbursement. Please reach out for more information.

What should I do before my first appointment to check my insurance coverage?

Before your first appointment, we recommend contacting us for an eligibility check to ensure that you understand your coverage, copays, and deductibles. This will help you avoid any surprises when it’s time to pay. Our team is here to help with this process!

Can I use my insurance for couples therapy?

In most cases, yes, if your insurance covers mental health services. If this is the case, we can typically bill for couples therapy sessions, provided you are covered under one of our in-network plans (UCare, BlueCross BlueShield, Optum, etc.). Contact us to confirm your eligibility before scheduling your first appointment.

How do I use my HSA or HRA for therapy payments?

You can use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) to pay for therapy at Northern Edge Counseling. After each session, we’ll provide you with an invoice that includes all necessary details. You can then submit this documentation to your HSA or HRA provider for reimbursement, or if you have a form of payment your HSA or HRA has provided, we can use that at the time of the service in the same way we would use a credit or debit card.
