Holistic Approaches to Personal Growth

Individual Therapy at Northern Edge Counseling

Therapy that goes deeper—because you’re not just here for quick fixes.

If your brain’s been running on repeat with things like:

  • “Why am I this exhausted all the time… but still getting absolutely nothing done?”
  • “Why do I always feel like I’m the one trying harder in relationships—and still getting hurt?”
  • “Everyone else seems to have it together. Why does it feel like I’m the only one falling apart?”
  • “Why can’t I just say what I mean without overthinking every word after?”
  • “Maybe I’m just broken. It shouldn’t be this hard to be okay.”

If any of that hits a little too close to home—welcome. You’re not alone, and you don’t have to keep white-knuckling it on your own. At Northern Edge Counseling, we don’t waste your time with checklists or toxic positivity.

Let’s be honest: if another podcast or planner could’ve fixed this, you wouldn’t be here. You’ve done the self-help deep dives. You’ve tried “fixing” yourself. And maybe you’ve even blamed yourself when it didn’t work.

Here, we do something different.

We start with you—your story, your nervous system, your pace. We build the kind of relationship where you don’t have to perform, shrink, or explain your existence. Where you’re met with honesty, real connection, and the safety to unpack it all… without being told to “just think positive”.

Because you’re not broken. You’re just tired of trying to survive in systems that were never built for you.

A Unique Approach to Therapy

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

An evidence-based approach that helps you understand and heal your inner family of parts.

Energy Psychology

Involves experiential techniques to address emotional and somatic issues.

Who We Work With

(Hint: You’re Probably More “Normal” Than You Think)

From the outside, you might look like you’ve got it all together. You’re holding it down at work, showing up for your people, maybe even getting a workout or two in each week… doing everything you’re “supposed” to do.

But on the inside?

You feel stuck. Worn thin. Running on fumes while pretending you’re fine. Maybe you’re overwhelmed but can’t pinpoint why. Or you’re quietly wondering, “Is this really it… or am I meant for something more?”

If that’s you, you’re in the right place.

Some things we hear all the time:

  • “I’m killing it at work, but I’m also quietly falling apart.”
  • “I love my kids/partner/friends but I have no idea how to actually feel fulfilled in these relationships.”
  • “I know I should feel grateful… so why do I feel empty?”
  • “I’m tired of always chasing the next goal—when does it ever feel like enough?”

And to be honest, most of our clients are people who know how to get things done… but feel absolutely stuck in their personal lives. They know how to push through things like chronic worry and patterns of overthinking, panic attacks, chronic pain, and depression that seems to cloud weeks that sometimes turn to months.

Many have been told they have Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), anxiety, depression, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Many carry attachment wounds, relational trauma, and a crushing sense of “I should be further along by now.”

This space is for you if you:

  • Want something to change, but aren’t sure what or how
  • Are deeply introspective, but feel like your brain is a bully
  • Can’t tell if it’s burnout, trauma, neurodivergence—or all of the above

Are sick of pretending you’re fine when you’re not

What Therapy Looks Like at Northern Edge

(Spoiler: No Toxic Positivity Here)

If you’ve been burned by therapy before—where it was all worksheets, shallow coping skills, or therapists who just nodded along without really getting you—this isn’t that.

We practice relationship-based therapy. That means:

  • We aren’t handing you homework just to check a box.
  • We’re not here to “fix you” (because you aren’t broken).
  • We’re not clock-watching while you spill your guts.

Instead, we focus on the actual relationship between you and your therapist—because research (and thousands of hours in the therapy chair) shows that real connection is what fosters real change.

You can expect:

✅ Direct but compassionate conversations
✅ Space to explore what’s actually going on—no matter how messy
✅ Therapists who show up as full humans, not blank slates
✅ Clarity on what’s happening inside your body, not just your thoughts

Why This Isn’t Cookie-Cutter Talk Therapy

Every person is different, which means therapy needs to actually be tailored to your nervous system, your history, your goals.

At Northern Edge Counseling, we draw from a range of trauma-informed, integrative, holistic approaches, including:

  • EMDR Therapy – For processing stuck trauma and moving through old wounds
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) – For understanding your inner world and all the “parts” of you
  • Biofeedback – For those who want tangible, body-based tools to regulate their nervous system
  • Jungian & Depth Therapy – For those craving deeper insight and meaning-making
  • Mindfulness-Based CBT – For working with thought patterns in a compassionate, non-shaming way
  • Somatic Therapy & Movement-Based Processing – Because your body holds your story, too
  • Energy Psychology & Psychedelic Integration – For people exploring alternative routes to healing

Our therapists won’t shove you into one model. We’ll co-create what works for you, based on what feels useful (and ditch what doesn’t).

How to Know If Individual Therapy Might Be Right for You

You don’t need to be in full-blown crisis to get support. Individual therapy might be the right fit if:

  • You’re functioning… but you’re deeply unfulfilled.
  • You keep recycling the same relationship patterns and don’t know how to stop
  • You struggle with anxiety, self-doubt, or imposter syndrome
  • You feel like life is happening to you, instead of something you’re actively living
  • You want to understand your neurodivergence more deeply
  • You need somewhere to just be human without the pressure to perform

And honestly? If you’re even wondering if therapy could help—there’s probably something inside you asking for a deeper conversation.

What You Can Expect to Get Out of This Work

Through this work, many clients find themselves walking away with something they didn’t think was possible: clarity.

Clarity around their triggers and patterns, clarity in understanding their nervous system without feeling stuck in constant overdrive, and clarity on what they actually need. They leave with practical, usable tools that aren’t just “nice ideas”—they hold up even on the hard days. Relationships start to feel more nourishing—beginning with the relationship to themselves. Rest no longer feels like something they have to “earn.” Communication gets easier, boundaries feel clearer, and that dull ache of burnout starts to ease as joy slowly makes its way back in. They gain a steadier, more grounded sense of self—one that doesn’t rely on constant self-criticism to stay motivated.

It’s not a magic wand. It’s honest, steady, deeply human work that builds change where it actually counts: in real life.

A Quick Reality Check

We can’t promise:
❌ You’ll always leave therapy feeling “better”
❌ You’ll fix everything in 8 weeks
❌ You’ll suddenly stop being human

But we can promise:
✔️ You’ll be seen and respected as you are
✔️ You’ll have a relationship with your therapist that feels safe and real
✔️ You’ll build capacity for change—on your timeline, in your way

Ready to Feel Like You Again?

You’ve spent enough time feeling stuck in your own head—cycling through overwhelm, burnout, and self-blame. You’ve probably tried all the things: muscling through it, reading the books, making the lists, giving yourself pep talks… and still ending up in the same exhausted place.

Therapy at Northern Edge isn’t about fixing you—because you’re not broken. It’s about untangling the noise, reconnecting with yourself, and building the kind of life that actually feels like yours again. A life where you can breathe easier, move through stress without crumbling, and show up in your relationships without feeling like you have to perform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer free consultations?

The connection and alliance you feel with your therapist is of the highest importance in talk therapy. We do a couple of things to make sure you are matched with the best fit we have to offer, including offering a “Match Your Therapist” quiz and offering free pre-consultations that are aimed to answer any and all questions you have about the way your therapist practices, how what they offer can help you, and to make sure the vibe is right.

How can I schedule an appointment?

Appointment requests can be sent to your therapist using this link. If you aren’t sure who your therapist is, or are a new client with questions needing to be answered prior to booking, connect with us using the contact page or directly connect via phone call, text, or email:

Email: jakkie@northernedgecounseling.com

Call/Text: 218-206-6676

Do you offer virtual or telehealth therapy?

We sure do! All of our therapists are able to meet folks online, from anywhere within Minnesota, using a secure telehealth platform that is HIPAA Compliant. The day of your therapy appointment, you’ll receive a text message or an email with your link to join your session that is compatible with your phone, laptop, or tablet

What’s a first therapy session actually like?

Expect a low-pressure, conversational space where your therapist gets to know you – not just your symptoms. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you in, what you’ve been carrying, and what you’d like to get out of therapy. No awkward icebreakers or grilling questions—just a chance to explore what feeling better could look like for you.

You can also use this time to ask questions, share any worries you have about therapy, and start shaping your goals. Some people come in with clear intentions, others just know something feels off. Either way, you’ll leave with a sense of direction—and maybe a little relief knowing you don’t have to figure it all out alone.

How much does therapy cost, and can I use my insurance?

At Northern Edge Counseling, we accept most major insurance plans, including:
✔️ BlueCross BlueShield
✔️ UCare
✔️ UnitedHealthcare (UHC), United Medical Resources (UMR), United Behavioral Health (UBH), Medica, Surest, and other plans under the Optum umbrella
✔️ Medicaid (MA)

You can also use your HSA or HRA funds to cover the cost of sessions, including copays, coinsurance, or deductibles.

Not using insurance? We offer a sliding scale option to reduce financial barriers, because we believe therapy should be accessible—not another stressor on your plate.

Fees vary depending on the service and clinician you’re working with, so the best next step is to reach out. We’re happy to help you navigate your benefits or talk through your options before you book your first session.

How often will I need to come to therapy—and for how long?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends on you.

Most people start with weekly sessions (that sweet spot of staying connected without feeling rushed), but it’s flexible. Some folks need or like more support and come twice a week, others move to every other week as things start to feel more manageable.

Therapy isn’t one-size-fits-all—and we’ll check in together about what pace feels right for you. If we’re diving into deeper work like trauma processing or big life transitions, we usually recommend meeting weekly to keep things steady and supportive.

Sessions typically run 50-60 minutes. Think of it like a dedicated hour that’s just for you—no judgment, no fixing, just real progress at your pace.

What can I expect to get out of therapy?

Most people come to therapy wanting to feel less overwhelmed, less anxious, and more connected to themselves—and that’s exactly what we focus on here at Northern Edge Counseling.

In therapy, you can expect to:

  • Understand what’s actually driving your stress, burnout, or anxiety—not just slap a band-aid on it.

  • Learn practical tools that actually work in your real life (not just in a therapy office).

  • Feel more grounded, with less emotional whiplash from day-to-day stressors.

  • Rebuild trust in yourself and reconnect with the version of you that doesn’t feel so stuck.

  • Create more fulfilling relationships—starting with the one you have with yourself.

This isn’t about fixing you. It’s about getting curious, building insight, and creating change that sticks.

What makes therapy at Northern Edge different?

Therapy with us isn’t about quick fixes or one-size-fits-all advice—it’s about creating lasting change through deep, relational, trauma-informed work.

Here’s what makes our approach stand out:

  • We prioritize the relationship—because being seen, heard, and understood changes everything.
  • We use trauma-informed and somatic-based tools, like EMDR, Internal Family Systems, biofeedback, and mindfulness.
  • We welcome all parts of you—even the messy, complicated, or protective parts you’ve been told to hide.
  • We follow your pace—therapy flexes to your needs, week-to-week, season-to-season.
  • We offer innovative options like psychedelic integration therapy and equine-assisted therapy alongside traditional talk therapy.

At Northern Edge Counseling, you won’t be told to “just journal more” or “try mindfulness and call it good.” We’re here to build something real with you—therapy that meets you where you are and helps you get where you want to go.
